Weird Wednesday – Hooks & Horror

Posted on November 19, 2025November 11, 2025 By Crymsyn Hart

I know where your mind is going. Maybe you’ve seen the ‘Hook Man’ episode from Season 1, Episode 7 of Supernatural. Where the boys have to vanquish the ghost of a 19th century pastor because his ghost is now haunting lover’s lane. They try to burn his bones, but…. I don’t want to give it all away if you haven’t seen it.

The Hook I’m talking about is what got you hooked into Horror Genre? Whether it was a book or a movie? Or maybe it was something else?

I got hooked into loving horror movies when I was four – yeah I know- when I first saw the movie Poltergeist (1982). It was on television and I recall watching it from behind a chair. I don’t remember what specific scene that really scared me, probably the closet one where the huge tongue comes out is and is trying to swallow them whole. Why my mother let me watch it, is still a mystery, but you know….things stick with you. And to this day I have to sleep with my closet door closed and I’m not too found of mirrors.

However, watching that movie got me hooked into the horror genre. I do like more Supernatural/Paranormal horror than slasher flicks.

But also keeps your interested in a movie or a good book? Do you watch them for character development? For the gore? Or just to let you mind wander away from reality?

Or do you dissect horror movies and try and find the “hook” that grabs your attention to keep you engaged in the movie or book? Whatever your hook is, I saw dig in deeper and hold on tight.
