Hey, kids.
Long time, no type. 2026 has been a strange year already, and I don’t really know what to make of it. There’s been a lot of personal nonsense for all of us here at Camp ‘Gator, and like Misty talked about earlier — the state of the world is enough to make all of us question our sanity. It feels disingenuous to pander for money when we’ve been dropped smack in the middle of the dumpster fire. But as artists, we also know that art is what gets people through the dark times.
We create to provide light. We are here to show the isolated and the frightened that they aren’t alone. We can build the worlds we want to live in. By doing so, we can provide a little bit of hope where there seems to be none.
Art is, and always has been, political. I know I talked about this a couple of months ago in more detail, so I’m not going to rehash it here. But it’s an important reminder.
I hate that fact as much as I hate the uncertainty of our times, but we can’t hide from the truth. I don’t write satire or scathing political commentary into my work–at least, not intentionally. I strive to create fair worlds that showcase the characters in ways that are both unique and powerful. But what I ultimately want to create is an escape. When someone picks up one of my books, I want them to be able to fall into a new reality. I want to give both brain and nervous system a break for a few minutes. But the fact that my books are LGBTQIA+ friendly and empower the disadvantaged in ways we don’t often see in real life makes them distasteful to some people.
Honestly, those people aren’t my target audience anyway. I can’t please everyone, but I can provide a safe fictional space for someone who might be afraid. As one person deep in a red state, there’s only so much I can do.
But I can do this. And if it pisses off a fascist in the process, all the better.
Anyway, I have a new book coming out. Edits are almost done and we’re moving onto formatting in the next week. Release date goal is 2/19 (my birthday, by the way…) If anyone’s looking for an escape, this is a good way to go about it.
